This family of four sits atop a nest of gunk from the ocean -- including dead fish and trash if they find it. Fortunately, the Galapagos are relatively free of it.
Because their feathers are not waterproof, they spread their small wings out to dry in the sun after swimming.
Phalacrocorax harrisi is the only cormorant found in the Galapagos Islands, and out of all the world's cormorant species it is the only one which lost it's ability to fly. The female lays three eggs, and usually only one survives, making this family of four rather special! Photographed on Fernandina Island -- Punta Espinosa, in the Galapagos Islands
